Louis Khan


Louis Kahn was born in Saarama, Estonia in 1901. His family emigrated to the U.S. in 1905. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. During the 1920s and 1930s he worked as a draughtsman and, later as a head designer for Philadelphia based firms. He was a world known architect but he was also known for doing what he thought would be perfect, and just creating what he called a master piece. The clients werent happy with his work so he wouldn’t have a lot of jobs. They wanted a say in how their building should be designed. Louis Khan created what he felt like, he was his own architect. He created 3 or 4 master peices like the library. He also had many kids from diffrent wifes. He kept his son a secret until the kids and wifes met each other at Louis Khan’s wake. Louis had 1 son and 2 daughters.
Nathan, his son, talked to his sisters when he got older to interveiw them for a video called “My Architect”.
Louis’ wives did not like each other but the kids felt that they were not a part of the problem so they wanted to know each other and learn about their father together. They learned a lot from his friends, relatives, and people who ever met him before. They also found out he had many other secret lovers, and that he was with his friends family on christmas and not with his kids. He also spent a lot of his time traveling to India and around the world. Inspite of all the negatives they learned about their father. They all knew there were positives, they knew there was something that made him a great man. Those positives included that he was his own man, made his own creations, and he made what felt to him was beautiful. But he didnt learn to listen and go with the program and that’s what messed up Louis Khan.


Louis Khan was millions of dollars in debt and lost more clients and had to pay for all the equipment he needed with his own funds. Louis had burns on his face from when he was a child becuase he was facinated by the glowing coal and picked one up, scalding his face and hands. His father said he would be better off dead, but his mom said it would make him a better person. So Louis grew up with perminent scarrs on his face and hands. He had no problem getting women, becasue he dated most of the female achitects in his office. One of Louis Khan’s creations was in Texas and it was said that it looked like a catle house, but the inside was suposed to be lit with Texas sun light. In the end of the project, the museum was a magical place because when the sun hit over head, the brightness crawled in and lit it up 3 times brighter. It made the walls glow.
All his creations were unexpected in the interior. The outside of the building would fool anyone, such as the library in India. Louis Khan was a good architect but reckless with his clients. Thats what ended his career, maybe even his life. I believe the debt caught up to Louis forcing him to commit suicide. He was so much into debt he could never pay it off so he decided to kill himself and scratch off his idenity so the bills couldnt trace him or his family. Louis Khan died 1974.
